The art of Afternoon Tea: A timeless British tradition

There’s a certain elegance and charm that comes with the sound of teacups clinking and the fragrance of freshly brewed tea in the air. We’re hoping to experience plenty of that this ‘Afternoon Tea Week’ which started today (7th August) and ends on 13th August. This quintessentially British tradition origins date back centuries and has evolved into a cherished and timeless art form. What better introduction to Afternoon Tea Week than a journey through the history and significance of this beloved tradition.

The birth of Afternoon Tea

The story begins in the early 19th century when Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, found herself feeling peckish in the afternoon. The gap between lunch and dinner was too long, to quell her hunger, she started requesting a light meal of tea, delicate cucumber sandwiches and small cakes to be served in her room.

Soon, this practice caught on among her friends, and before long, ‘taking tea’ was the most fashionable way for members of high society to spend their afternoons. The afternoon tea gatherings were typically hosted in the drawing rooms of aristocratic homes, creating an opportunity for socialising, sharing news, and discussing the latest trends.

The evolution of a tradition

With the spread of British influence across the globe during the Victorian era, Afternoon Tea began to transcend borders. As colonial powers established their presence in various countries, they carried this tradition with them, introducing it to new cultures and adapting it to local customs.

In England, Afternoon Tea became a symbol of refined living, and tea houses and tearooms started popping up, offering a place for people from all walks of life to indulge. The concept of “high tea” emerged, catering to the working class, where heartier items like pies and meat dishes were served with tea.

Afternoon Tea in the 21st Century

Despite changes in societal norms and the rapid pace of modern life, Afternoon Tea managed to withstand the test of time. In the 21st century, the tradition experienced a renaissance, with people seeking respite from their busy schedules and embracing the opportunity to slow down and reconnect with loved ones.

The essence of Afternoon Tea resonates with people worldwide. Beyond the borders of Britain, Afternoon Tea found a home in different cultures, for example, Moroccan tea rituals.
