Our History

Our journey began in 1896, and over the past century, we've grown and evolved alongside the events industry. Explore our timeline below to discover the key milestones that have shaped CGC into the company it is today.

1896

Craven Gilpin and Sons establish a catering business at The Mansion, Roundhay Park.

1905

The company’s first marquee wedding was catered for in Gledhow. 3 miles from The Mansion, everything is transported by horse and cart for the wedding breakfast of Beatrice & Ernest Burrows.

1981

CGC’s largest catering contract commences at York Racecourse.

1983

Start of concessions portfolio.

1985

First Paris Air Show contract.

2003

A Management Buy-In prompts a name change, and the business becomes CGC Events.

2003

First Large Scale Conference/Exhibition Centre – Yorkshire Events Centre.

2005

First football stadium contract – Stockport County F.C.

2015

CGC Events is acquired by SMG Europe, the worldwide leader in venue management.

2015

First Wedding venue – Sun Pavilion.

2017

First Theatre – Nottingham Theatre Royal & Royal Concert Hall.

2019

SMG merges with AEG Facilities to create ASM Global; the world’s leading venue management and services company.

2023

First arena/live music – The University of Wolverhampton at The Halls.
